The happiest moment of my life was when I went to Okinawa, Japan. Growing up I always spent time with my grandma Yoshiko who is from Okinawa, Japan. She has taught me to always embrace my Okinawan Roots. When I was 7 my grandma taught me from a young age to perform traditional Okinawa dance and singing. It was something that has always stayed with me. When I was a freshman I applied to the “2017 Uchina (Okinawa) Junior Study Program.” It was a program for people my age who are part Okinawan and would like to deepen their connection with their identity. I was so nervous that I wasn't going to get accepted but about a month later I found out that I was accepted! I was so happy! I home stayed with my uncle Kiyoshi and his wife Chiyoko. I also met my cousin Lisa. During the program I made so many friends who are from all over the world. We learned so much about Okinawa’s history, cultural influences, the war of Okinawa and much more. One thing I will never forget is when my uncle Kiyoshi took me to a karaoke bar until 3 in the morning. When it was my turn to sing everyone in the bar was shocked and impressed that I was able to sing in Japanese and Okinawan. It was so fun and I was able to connect with my uncle through music. I will never forget my time in Okinawa.
Its cool to know that we share a connection to the Japanese community.
